F is for Friend

Women of the Bible from A to Z series

“A friend loves you all the time,
and a brother helps in time of trouble.”
Proverbs 17:17 ncv

There is no woman's name which begins with “F” in the Bible, so I chose to write on the name “Friend."

What is a Friend? The dictionary describes them as - somebody emotionally close, who trusts and is fond of another - as an acquaintance, who thinks well of, is on good terms with – an ally not an enemy – an advocate, defender, supporter, pal, buddy, companion, comrade

Do you know anyone named Friend? I have many. They fit in different circles of my life and meet different needs. Some are from my childhood, others from the many moves we’ve made, and others are also related to me by blood or marriage.

The Bible says a friend loves you all the time, is a help in time of trouble, (Prov. 17:17) and is more loyal than a brother (Prov. 18:24). God called Abram [Abraham] His friend (Gen. 15). Jonathan and David is the best known friendship of the Bible (1 Sam. 20). Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus (John 11), seem to be sister-friends. King Solomon wrote that “two are better than one…but woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up” (Eccl. 4:9-12).

My closest, best Friend is my husband of 37 years. He is definitely my greatest emotional supporter and trusted confidant. I have a best girl-Friend since childhood who listens and laughs and cries and prays with and for me.

But my greatest Friend is Jesus.  His says a friend is willing to die for the other. He calls me Friend. (John 15:12-17)

“I asked Jesus, ‘How much do you love me?’ And Jesus said, ‘This much.’ Then he stretched out His arms and died.’” – Author unknown.
