Boxed In

Big, little, medium, short, flat, tall, stout, flimsy. From the moving store, the grocery store, even the shoe store. Boxes, boxes, stacked here, there, and everywhere; creating overwhelming chaos…

Sort, pack, stack. The process goes on and on, from room to room, from corner to corner. No time to dwell on the memories. Need to keep going.

But the tears come. Laughter erupts. Pain causes me to take a break.

I press on.

“Why did I keep this?”

“Where did is this come from?”

“Whose is this and what IS it?”

“I’ve looked high and low for this!”

It’s amazing how much stuff we accumulate in thirty years. I should be saying 10 years, but we didn’t do a deep enough eradication during our last move—which came after 20 years in the same house raising our two sons.

I’m determined to downsize our material life.

Keep, sell, eliminate, donate, return to the rightful owner

The painstaking task is reserved only for me or my husband…no one else can make these determinations. Coats, hats, scarves, shoes, boots, clothes, clothes, and more clothes. “Do I really need this many pairs of black slacks?”

Needs, essentials, wants...I pause to reflect on Jesus’s words:
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth,
where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
Store your treasures in heaven,
where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:19-21 (nlt)

What is my heart's treasure?

I hope I don’t bore you with my moving stories, but at the moment, it’s consuming my life!
Leave your thoughts, share a moving story, or simply say a prayer for me to survive this mayhem.

  1. My dear Merrie,
I understand consumption and stuff that we really don't need. I love Jesus' words you shared...they are a reality check in our world of needing more. I will enjoy your moving stories for I have moved many times myself and know how difficult it can be. But do press on...in the end it with be worth it all. Prayers heading your way!

    1. Moving definitely inspires Jesus reality check on what's really important. Thanks for not being bored with my tales, and for the much needed prayers.

  2. I'll be praying.

I completely understand the making the decisions only something you and your husband can do. I'm going to have to move very soon but physically am unwell right now, well, going on for the last five months, and people keep offering to help go through things, and no one seems to understand that it'd be harder to have them do it than me!

Praying as you try to prioritize and get things done...and not get swallowed up in the boxes!

    1. Thank you for your prayer support because it is easy to get swallowed up in the boxes! I'll pray for you as you too go through the process of sorting, purging, and packing...and for the "right" people to help when the time is right. God bless.
