Altshuler Upsets Bobi at Spokane: Three Two-Point Sets and the Real Weight of 300 Points

Three of the four sets in the men's Class 6 final at the ITTF Para Challenger Spokane were decided by two points: 12-10, 13-11, 12-10. The remaining set belonged to Simion Bobi at 11-4, the only set in which neither player reached deuce. Sam Altshuler won 3-1, taking the first Challenger gold medal of his career and beating the player ranked world No. 3 in his class.

The scoreline says very little. Those three sets did not belong to the harder hitter. At 10-10 the match narrows to one question: which ball do you choose. I rewatched the footage at almost 3 a.m. Saigon time, muted the commentary and listened only to the ball striking the rubber. Table tennis at those moments has its own sound — thin, clean, with no room for cheering to fill in.

Altshuler said afterwards: “It was a tough match in final, and it was great to get it done.” There is nothing special in that sentence, and I trust it more than any polished line. A player who has just won three sets by two points does not need to speak loudly.

Two tiers of events, two different weights

Challenger and Elite are different rungs of the ITTF Para system. Both carry international ranking points, but the entry field and the density of competition at the top end are not the same. That a world No. 3 turned up at a Challenger — and lost — deserves more attention than the celebration.

For Altshuler, the title brought 300 points, moving him to world No. 6, just outside the top five, before the ITTF Para Elite Spokane opens on August 11. After that comes Yvelines, France, in September, and then the ITTF Para World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, from November 13 to 19.

Class 6 is a standing class, for athletes with substantial physical impairment. That shapes the whole scoring structure of a match: limited lateral movement makes each point shorter, and when points get shorter, the serve and the third ball gain value. In para table tennis the serve is not a formality that opens a rally. It is the primary tactical weapon, and at 10-10 it is the only weapon still intact.

Altshuler added: “If you told me two years ago, I never would have thought I would be at this level. I want to thank everyone supporting me and to thank my mom and dad for helping me throughout my whole journey in table tennis.”

Four sets, two structures, one player choosing right

The key point is that the four sets had two entirely different structures, and the winner was the player who switched between them faster.

The 4-11 set was the set in which Altshuler lost control of the serve. In a set lost by seven points there are usually only two scenarios: he gave away a long run of points by repeating a serve the opponent had read, or he changed the serve deliberately and paid for it in errors. Both roads end in the same place — Bobi got to play exactly the ball he wanted: long, topspin, landing in the middle of the table, where a Class 6 player has the least room to turn.

I do not have a point-by-point sheet, so the above is inference from the scoreline, not reporting from the floor. But one thing reads clearly: in the other three sets, no set exceeded a two-point margin. That is the signature of a match in which both players had decoded each other's serve, and the outcome was settled in the final layer — the layer of the chooser.

At 10-10, para table tennis stops being a contest of physical resistance. It becomes risk management. The decisive shot is not the best shot but the least risky shot that still surprises. For a Class 6 athlete, risk comes from two sources: recovery time between points, and the ability to re-establish balance after a wide shot. The player who chooses correctly at deuce is usually not the one who dares. That is the one who knows exactly how many shots remain.

The 13-11 third set was the heaviest psychologically. Having lost the second 4-11, Altshuler walked into the third facing a very real risk of going 1-2 down. Winning that set by two points changed the entire weight of the fourth. By 12-10 in the last set, Bobi was the one who had to play first — and in that state, a player can win a set 11-4 and still lose one 10-12.

A ranking cannot measure the table

There is a counterintuitive reading of this result, and it needs to be said before the story is packaged as a shock.

Para rankings run on points accumulated from events across the cycle. Accumulated points reward the player who travels, not only the player who plays well. A top-three player may pick a Challenger to keep match rhythm, test a new serve structure, or bank points at low risk. A player outside the top five has to win events like this one to earn a place at Elite level and beyond. The two men walked into the same final carrying two different problems.

None of that makes Altshuler's win smaller. Three two-point sets in a final are real, and nobody handed them to him. But it places the result correctly: the gap between No. 6 and No. 3 in the rankings may be wider, or narrower, than the gap between them across the table — and the points system cannot tell the two apart. Every player is a universe of his own; I am only borrowing their glasses to watch the match.

From Saigon, part of this story is familiar. Para athletes in the region have to travel a long way to earn points, and every trip is a trade-off between a packed calendar and recovery time. A stop like Spokane is not one everybody can reach. Pattaya in November therefore carries a double meaning: a world championship, and a rare occasion when the whole region has a major stop inside the region.

What to watch

The ITTF Para Elite Spokane, opening on August 11, is the most direct test. The question is not whether Altshuler can win again. The question is whether he can reproduce his ability to win two-point sets now that opponents have footage of him, now that their analysts know which serve he picks at 10-10.

A forgotten article and a match played in an empty arena — both wait for someone to read them again. At 31, I no longer believe in comebacks; I believe in continuation. Two years ago Altshuler did not think he would stand at this level. Three months from now will say more about where he stands than any ranking can.
