George Russell sacrificed at Monza? Montoya questions Mercedes double-stack strategy

Monza handed Italy a victory it had awaited for almost 60 years. Andrea Kimi Antonelli crossed the line with the chequered flag in a perfect race, but the technical story did not start with him. It started with a decision during the virtual safety car and with the price George Russell paid to make Mercedes' 1-2 complete. Russell controlled the early stages. He led, ran clean and looked like the number one candidate for victory. When the VSC appeared, Mercedes kept him out while Antonelli pitted. Tyre age and track advantage were reversed instantly, and Antonelli eventually caught Russell. Juan Pablo Montoya did not hesitate to point out the issue. Russell was leading and should have been given priority in the pitstop. Under VSC, the cost of stopping is far smaller than under normal conditions. If Mercedes had double-stacked, Russell could have stayed ahead of Antonelli. Montoya argued that Antonelli might still have caught him, but the final laps would have been a genuine fight. 'He was leading and he should have had the priority on the pitstop,' the Colombian said on F1 TV. Toto Wolff defended the decision. He said a two-stop was not the best option for Russell and that the team had committed to a one-stop with the hard tyre. But the tactical debate remains. When a driver is leading, the team's natural priority usually lies with the man most likely to win. What is often forgotten is how VSC changes the pitstop equation. A normal pitstop costs around 22 seconds; under VSC, the whole field slows down and the loss can fall to 12–14 seconds. Therefore, a leader who stays out loses tyre-age advantage and becomes vulnerable after the pit entry opens. That is precisely what happened to Russell. However, Mercedes' choice was not completely unreasonable. Double-stacking always increases the risk of a pit-lane error, especially at Monza where the pit lane is short and speed limits are high. The team also had to protect the overall result; a 1-2 finish is an ideal outcome. Using Russell as a 'shield' for Antonelli may be emotionally difficult to accept, but it makes sense if the priority is maximising the team score. The blind spot was that the team never clearly acknowledged that Russell's personal result was sacrificed for the collective. Antonelli's victory is a historic moment for Italian racing. But for George Russell, this is another moment that raises questions about his status within the team. Mercedes will say every decision has technical grounds. Long-time observers know that inside the pit-wall, some choices never show up on the data sheet. That grey area, as I have often written, is not a place lacking light; it is where the sport is at its most real.
