When analysis reports are empty, Vietnamese football faces a data shock

At midnight, an analysis report was sent to the newsroom under the name 'Stage-2 Deep Analysis Report'. When I opened it, all I saw was one word repeated in every section: N/A. No match, no player, no numbers. For a sports reporter, that emptiness is terrifying.
But what does this emptiness tell us? In Vietnamese football, the line between media and data remains blurred. Most analysis is still based on gut feeling and short video clips. There is no widely recognized independent statistics system. So when an automated analytical tool returns an empty result, it is not just a technical glitch. It reflects a systemic void.
The report says: there is no information to assess tactics. Yet on the pitch, Vietnamese teams still play, still use tactical formations. Coaches still select line-ups and instruct their players. The absence of data does not mean that reality itself does not exist. It simply means that the analyst has no microscope.
In the finance section, the report repeats the phrase 'insufficient information'. Vietnamese football has seen a recent influx of sponsorship money. The V-League has secured better broadcast-rights deals. But concrete figures on wage bills, transfer fees, and debt remain in the dark. Clubs such as Hanoi FC and Công An Hà Nội publish partial information, and nobody can confidently describe the true financial landscape.
This leads to a consequence: analysts cannot give precise recommendations. An academy may produce skilled players, but without data on minutes played, touches, and distance covered for each young player, how can we understand real potential? In developed football nations, data is the foundation of youth development. Vietnam still has no national standard for this.
The report contains no transfer market section, but the domestic transfer market is very active. Every season, lower-tier teams sell their best players to bigger clubs to balance budgets. The lack of data allows fees to be either inflated or unfairly low. Fans have no objective basis to judge whether a transfer is fair. The report leaves the risk and media perception sections blank, indicating that our own media industry is struggling with the same data problem.
However, there is something positive: a modern analytical tool acknowledging that it cannot make an assessment is an act of honesty. It refuses to fabricate figures. It does not exaggerate a team's true ability. That honesty is rare in today's football writing. Many outlets are ready to label a club as 'championship favourite' after just one win.
The time has come for Vietnamese football to build a public, verifiable database, with every club required to submit statistics under a shared standard. We should start with basics like appearances, minutes, goals, and yellow/red cards, and gradually learn advanced metrics such as xG and PPDA. If we achieve that, analysis reports will no longer fall into N/A. For professionals like me, I do not only write about goals; I write about the world between two passes. That world needs data as its map.
The story of the empty report should not be forgotten. It is a reminder: Vietnamese football is growing, but its information foundation still has cracks. If regulators do not integrate data into the rules, every other reform will be just a building on sand. When the floodlights dim, the real match only begins for those who have data to understand the pitch.
